  Lancia Smith, President  Welcome to the website for Smith Environmental and Engineering (SMITH)! I have heard many people say in the face of so many changes recently that these are “hard times”. While it is true that there are indeed many difficulties facing us as a nation, I believe there is also great opportunity before us as well. Leaner economic times can be a tremendous platform for learning how to function better at our essential levels – core competencies – how to be resourceful, exercise good character and courage, focus on the important not the transient things in our lives. Leaner economic times can be the impetuous to correct weaknesses in our businesses and in our selves that would be easier to ignore in the comfort of easier times. Like many others, we have seen changes within our company during this time. We have added three new staff members and increased our services for the benefit of our clients. This year we became yet more involved with our communities by providing support to Habitat for Humanity and increased outreach to the needy further from home by our involvement with World Vision. We have added scores of projects and new clients, along with maintaining strong relationships with existing clients. We recently remodeled our offices which in many ways reflect the way we have remodeled our company over the past year. We have built new walls to define internal structure, streamlined, looked at our core strengths, faced some critical elements of our own weaknesses, and are emerging a stronger, leaner, more adaptive and effective company than ever. In the face of “hard times” and pressing uncertainties, I genuinely look to our future with more hope and enthusiasm than ever before for what lies ahead – not because of our new political administration, nor any expectation of easing economic strain in the months ahead, nor the possibility of easier success. It is simply because I know that the principles on which our company is built will stand up through shifting difficulties of these times and prevail. Our steadfast commitment as a team remains unchanged to provide outstanding, sustainable environmental services to our clients and communities and to do so in a reliably ethical manner. We maintain the insistent drive to do better for our clients each day and to be grateful for each opportunity to serve others.
