Brandon & Darrin Help A Moose in Need

A subadult moose (Alces alces) found its way to a small mitigation drainage near west 149th Ave. and Huron Street in Westminster, Colorado.  In North America, moose typically inhabit boreal forests ranging from Alaska and Canada to the northern Rockies and New England.  Moose were only sporadic in Colorado until they were introduced in 1978 and 1979.  Now they are present in many areas of the state including just west of Denver, where this individual probably came from.

SMITH wildlife biologists Brandon Marette and Darrin Masters assisted the Colorado Division of Wildlife in capturing this moose so that it can be translocated west of Boulder.  This subadult was likely trying to disperse and find a new home when it wandered a little too far east.
